What is green prescribing?

Green prescribing is a practice that may be recommended by any healthcare professional to support and encourage people to engage in nature-based activities. This can not only have a positive impact on the environment but also a person's health or chronic condition.

How can I help someone elses asthma or health?

Though it sounds crazy, you can actually affect someone’s asthma with your actions!

It might not be so shocking to learn that high pollution and poor air quality can have a negative impact on asthma but what can we do can reduce the effects of asthma on people and their likelihood of experiencing an asthma attack?

In addition to this, long term exposure to air pollution can cause chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological disease. This is because air pollutants (or particulate matter) can affect different systems as they enter the body. Some examples of conditions associated with particulate matter are diabetes, CHS, stoke, asthma, lung cancer, COPD, dementia and low birth weight.

Ways to help directly and indirectly:

  1. Involve yourself in park runs or gardening ðŸŒēðŸŠī🏃‍♂ïļ

We at mosborough have an allotment available for people of any age to get involved, we are also a park run practice. Activities like this can enhance overall lung functions, not to mention having a positive impact on the environment.

  1. Ditch the car! ❌🚗

Unsurprisingly cars are massive contributors to air pollution and gas emissions, additionally it has also been shown that pollution levels inside the car can be higher than outside, so it may be best to avoid the car whenever possible. Cyclists are also exposed to far less air pollutants than those in cars!

  1. Avoid engine idling 🚗ðŸ’Ļ

If taking the car is unavoidable, you can still try things like turning off your engine when not moving and safe to do so. This can prevent the emission of harmful gasses like nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.

  1. Take the side roads ðŸ›ĢðŸšļ

One study indicates that side streets can offer a 50% decrease in pollution exposure compared to main roads. Another study had shown that spending time in areas with lower pollution can lower levels of inflammation and stress hormones, both linked to asthma flare ups.

  1. Change your search engine 🔍ðŸ’ŧ

Ecosia is a great alternative to general search engines as every search can help to plant new trees across the planet, its servers use carbon free power and other sustainable sources of energy to remove 1kg of CO2 from the air.

  1. Using your inhaler properly ðŸ˜Ū‍ðŸ’ĻðŸ’Ļ

This can impact yourself so that you don’t repeatedly use your inhaler without it being effective and ensuring that it reaches your lungs properly. Also the number of inhalers you use will likely decrease. Proper disposal of inhalers is also crucial to prevent release of propellant gasses into the atmosphere.

  1. Research for yourself! 👀ðŸ•ĩïļ‍♂ïļ

By understanding your impact on the environment you can engage in sustainable behaviours and practices to fit your lifestyle, it’s all about improving the conscious choices we make. Just by researching you will take a big step into a better future for yourself, others and the planet.
